Dark Matter in the Light of Cobe

چکیده

The observations of all three COBE instruments are examined for the effects of dark matter. The anisotropy measured by the DMR, and especially the degreescale groundand balloon-based experiments, is only compatible with large-scale structure formation by gravity if the Universe is dominated by non-baryonic dark matter. The FIRAS instrument measures the total power radiated by cold dust, and thus places tight limits on the absorption of starlight by very cold gas and dust in the outer Milky Way. The DIRBE instrument measures the infrared background, and will place tight limits on the emission by low mass stars in the Galactic halo.

Microwave Anisotropies in the Light of COBE

The recent COBE measurement of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background and the recent South Pole experiment of Gaier et al. offer an excellent opportunity to probe cosmological theories. We test a class of theories in which the Universe today is flat and matter dominated, and primordial perturbations are adiabatic parameterized by an index n. In this class of theories the predicted sign...

INFLATION AFTER COBE Lectures on Inflationary Cosmology∗

In these lectures I review the standard hot big-bang cosmology, emphasizing its successes, its shortcomings, and its major challenge—a detailed understanding of the formation of structure in the Universe. I then discuss the motivations for—and the fundamentals of—inflationary cosmology, particularly emphasizing the quantum origin of metric (density and gravity-wave) perturbations. Inflation add...

Inflation and Mixed Dark Matter Models

Recent large scale structure observations, including COBE, have prompted many authors to discuss modifications of the standard Cold Dark Matter model. Two of these, a tilted spectrum and a gravitational wave contribution to COBE, are at some level demanded by theory under the usual assumption that inflation generates the primeval perturbations. The third, whose motivation comes by contrast from...

Cosmic Structure Formation and the Background Radiation

I describe our post-COBE theories for how structure developed in the Universe, from the ultra-large scales beyond that httle bit of the Universe accessible to our observations to ‘short-distance’ scales where gaa dynamicrd processes will have been m importmt m gravity in shaping the high redshift objects that formed. In between lie the very large scales whose gravitationrd potential fluctuation...

Cold Dark Matter Ii: Spatial and Velocity Statistics

We examine high-resolution gravitational N-body simulations of the Ω = 1 cold dark matter (CDM) model in order to determine whether there is any normalization of the initial density fluctuation spectrum that yields acceptable results for galaxy clustering and velocities. Dense dark matter halos in the evolved mass distribution are identified with luminous galaxies; the most massive halos are al...
